There are few people I choose to receive Twitter messages from directly to my BlackBerry. Joe Zee, the Creative Director of Elle magazine is one. My horror of horrors appeared last night in a tweet from Joe. “At my shoot today, my February coverstar and I officially declared the return of the midriff top. Let the boos begin.”,@MrJoeZee. My response was a quick “boo” back to him. Why declare the return of something if you are expecting to get booed? I don’t get it, what happened to wow-ing us?
The 80’s look, back when we actually lived through the 80’s, was hideous. What is the point of the return of ugly? All I can visiualize is this midriff top (aka belly shirt) look, paired with acid wash jeans and white sneakers. EPIC FAIL!
Be smart. Just because someone says an article of clothing is a trend, YOU DON’T HAVE TO FOLLOW IT! Two things I worry about with this “official return of the midriff top”. #1 – The majority of females do not have the body that Joe Zee’s coverstar does to wear a belly shirt properly. #2 – Pair one of these tops with the popular low riding pant (which no one wore in the 80’s) and you could have muffin top meets plummer’s crack. A very cheap and cheesy look.
A general rule of thumb in buying clothing: Wear what is comfortable and fitting, not just looks good. If you need to keep tugging, moving, jostling, any piece of clothing to keep it in place, it is wrong for you….and you look like a total wreck pulling at yourself. Not cool and controlled.
One of the few 80’s items someone over the age of 25 and living in the real world should wear, is the blazer/jacket with shoulder pads. Modernize the look with a bit less pad. A suited up football player look is not elegant. A major plus with shoulder pads, it makes the rest of your body look smaller. You can’t beat that with a carrot stick!
The maestro of this look is Ralph Lauren. A timeless, classic look you can wear for decades. See the 80’s inspired blouse of his, worn with his jackets. Gorgeous. This is the way to wear 80’s retro. Classic, not cheesy, color of the moment but very 2009. Perfect for the office. The purple Dustin Wool Blazer is Lauren by Ralph Lauren.
Weekend casual, never goes out of style. From the Black Label line by Ralph Lauren, this Daryn Tweed Hacking Jacket is appropriate for work or play.
Wear these jackets simple or pump them up with accessories. A scarf, statement necklace, big earrings, or a brooch. There are so many ways to rock this look, simple and chic or urban edge. The choice is all yours and thats what makes this delicious.
Keep in mind while shopping for trends. Choose items that reflect the image you want to project to the world. The world IS watching……..
